FTTH

What is FTTH

FTTH is an abbreviation of Fiber To The Home, and refers to a network configuration that directly leads to general homes among FTTx.

FTTx includes FTTH (Fiber To The Home), FTTC (Fiber To The Curb), and FTTB (Fiber To The Building). High-speed communication is achieved by connecting telecommunications carriers to homes, curbs, and buildings via optical fiber.

With ADSL, the communication speed decreased in proportion to the distance from the accommodation station. It is characterized by being able to perform stable communication because it is not affected by the interference of

The system that connects the station and the user’s home on a one-to-one basis without branching with an optical splitter (optical coupler) is called the “single-star system”, and the system that branches and connects one-to-N is called the “double-star system”. calling.

Currently, GE-PON (Gigabit Ethernet-Passive Optical Network) of IEEE802.3ah standard is widely used.

A connection example is shown below.

The ONU (Optical Network Unit) in the home is a device that has the function of converting electrical signals and optical signals, and is connected to a device called an optical splitter. The optical splitter branches the optical line from the accommodation station.

The optical splitter is housed in a gray case (by NTT), also called a closure.

An OLT (Optical Line Terminal), which is an optical line terminal, is installed in the accommodation station. ONUs and OLTs are paired devices, and optical fibers and optical splitters, which are media for transmitting optical signals, are devices that only allow optical signals to pass through. Therefore, the name PON is used.

Passive in PON (Passive Optical Network) means “passive”.

The Internet is connected to the end of the OLT.

FTTH construction

When installing optical fiber, you need to cut a hole in the wall of your house. Recently, however, optical fiber cables have been improved, and in the case of buildings with pipes running through them, there are fewer cases of drilling holes by passing the optical fiber cables through the pipes.

Also, if there is already a pipe for the outdoor unit of the air conditioner, there are cases where you do not have to drill a hole in the house by passing the optical fiber cable through the pipe to the outdoor unit.

Please note that FTTH will incur construction costs. ADSL also requires construction work, but ADSL construction work is basically done in the accommodation station, and there is basically no work at home. This is because if you already have a landline phone contract, you already have the phone line inside your home and the outlet on the wall.

In FTTH, construction will be large-scale. That’s because you need to bring fiber optic cables into your home. The construction cost will be 20,000 to 30,000 yen.

There are cases where the construction fee is free, but that is only when the basic construction is completed. If you buy an air conditioner, you need an additional fee if you can’t get enough of the basic construction. Even with FTTH, additional charges may be incurred if basic construction is not enough.

Even if the basic construction is completed free of charge, removal work will be required when canceling the contract. In that case, you may have to pay the costs yourself, so be sure to check carefully before signing a contract.
